Planning for the future – St Paul’s Church Community Consultation

While I was at today’s St Paul’s Community Day helping out with the Winchester Churches Night Shelter stand, I was given a leaflet about the St Paul’s Church Community Consultation.

They want people’s views on how the buildings and open spaces beside the church could be updated and improved to serve the Fulflood community better.

If you’d like to respond, the questionnaire is available online via http://stmatthewsandstpauls.org.uk/our-future/how-can-we-be-better.

Police community meeting for Fulflood – May 25

Just been forwarded the attached via Neighbourhood Watch:

Police and partners will be holding a community meeting for the residents of Weeke, Teg Down, Harestock, Littleton and Fulflood areas of Winchester.

The first PACT (Partnership and Communities Together) meeting for these areas will be held at 7pm on Friday, May 25 at Peter Symonds College.

Sergeant Matt Fancett, said: “The aim of this meeting is for members of the public to set local policing and community safety priorities by discussing local issues with the police and our key partners locally.

“If you believe that there are issues within your community this will be your chance to discuss them with the police and our partners. If you live in Weeke, Harestock, Littleton and Fulflood areas of Winchester, just turn up on the night, and we can discuss any community issues with you. We hope to see you there.”

We would like to encourage as many members of public to attend as possible to discuss these issues and we will be advertising this soon in the area. Please feel free to pass this information on to anyone who you may feel would benefit or like to attend.

The meeting is at 7 p.m.  Flyer is attached here.

Thank you

Thank you to everyone who supported me in the local elections yesterday – whether by voting for me or helping the campaign.

The final result was:

Candidate Party Result %
FALL Alexis Conservative 442 26.9%
FOX Nigel Labour 300 18.3%
TOD Martin Liberal Democrat 899 54.8%

It was a mixed night – with some excellent colleagues losing their seats – and some other excellent colleagues winning seats that we lost as recently as last year.

Loads to do, and more tomorrow, but right now I need to go to bed!

School Places update

Hampshire County Council has launched a consultation on primary school places in Winchester – looking at three options:

  • Option A: Primary provision as part of The Westgate School
Create a 420 place primary provision on the Rotherly site adjacent to The Westgate School, and change the age range of the school so that it caters for pupils between the ages of 4-16.
  • Option B: The expansion of existing primary schools
Expand a number of existing schools in the Winchester area.
  • Option C: Alternative proposals (sic)
Hampshire County Council would welcome proposals for viable alternative options. There are basic criteria these would have to fulfil.

The local Lib Dem County Councillors will shortly be meeting County Council Officers to review the options with them and understand them better.

One question to understand is why Rotherly is the only site put forward.  Previously (as, for example, when Lanterns was being planned) a range of sites were put forward.

We also want to see more work on the traffic front.  Currently they’re assuming no increase in traffic from putting a new school at Rotherly which, given how the road looks during the school run currently, before it even has a school on it, seems optimistic.

Open meetings are also planned – both at 7:30 pm – on May 8 at Westgate and on May 15 in the Ashburton Hall, Elizabeth II Court, The Castle.

There will also be drop-in sessions at the County Council offices and at Westgate School.  Details of the drop-in sessions are here.

Litter Parking St Paul Winchester

Parking, litter-picking and tidy-mindedness

A good session helping Winchester Litterpickers at the station this morning. They meet every Monday at 9.30 a.m. on the Station forecourt – anyone who wants to help is very welcome – equipment will be provided if you don’t already have a litter picker of your own. It’s both amazing and depressing how much litter can build up in a week – and very satisfying to help pick it all up.

The Litter Pickers are a great institution and make a really important (and noticeable) difference to the city: it was excellent that John Green-Wilkinson’s role in setting up the Litterpickers was recognised in the New Year Honours with an MBE.

I was invited along to their annual party on Friday night as one of their occasional helpers – but unfortunately could only get there towards the end due to a public meeting at Peter Symonds about proposed parking restrictions in Weeke.

This was set up by a local resident, Steve Feeney, who also set up a helpful website to explain the issue.
