Your questions answered
I first put a ‘Your Questions Answered’ section onto my website shortly before the 2001 General Election and I’ve been positively surprised ever since how much attention it gets.
I’m very happy to answer any questions you might have and will aim to answer all questions received within 2 days.
Question: What is your attitude to the recent announcement that Blair wants to fully upgrade our nuclear weapons?
I am generally extremely sceptical towards anything Tony Blair might say on foreign and defence policy.
My personal belief is that the case for a credible nuclear threat to the UK has not yet been made, and that our priority should be to get rid of our nuclear weapons as part of a general programme of multilateral disarmament and non-proliferation. I cannot see a moral case for ever using them. The issues of climate change, energy security and terrorism are much more real and immediate threats to our national security and Trident does not do anything to address any of those challenges.
It’s also not clear why Blair feels such a burning need to make the decision now, rather than leaving it to a later date, unless it is to “secure his legacy” or to maintain his relationship with George Bush.
Question: How important is it that the PPC/MP should work closely with local councillors and council candidates? Will you commit to joint campaigning with your local government colleagues?
It’s absolutely critical. In both my previous campaigns as PPC, my campaign has been built around local Focus and community politics campaigning on local issues. I’ve also seen how damaging it can be if MPs and Councillors don’t work closely together. In my 100 day plan I’ve committed to campaigning in every ward with Councillors and Campaigners. I’ve often found that conversations while campaigning on the doorsteps, or in the pub afterwards, are the best way to get to know what matters to people most in a local area.
