{"id":37,"date":"2006-04-19T23:55:41","date_gmt":"2006-04-19T23:55:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.martintod.org.uk\/blog\/?p=37"},"modified":"2006-04-19T23:55:41","modified_gmt":"2006-04-19T23:55:41","slug":"old-chums-connection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.martintod.org.uk\/blog\/2006\/04\/old-chums-connection\/","title":{"rendered":"Old chums connection?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stephen Tall <a href=\"http:\/\/oxfordliberal.blogspot.com\/2006\/04\/out-to-luntz.html\">wonders why the BBC continue to retain Frank Luntz over at &#8216;A Liberal Goes A Long Way&#8217;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I wonder if he&#8217;s seen the <a href=\"http:\/\/daviddavisleader.blogspot.com\/2005\/10\/old-chums-connection.html\">earlier comments on the &#8216;David Davis for leader&#8217; blog<\/a>?  <\/p>\n<p>BBC management probably like Luntz because he makes entertaining TV and he predicted the Cameron victory &#8211; although several commentators have made the case that the causality actually went the other way and that <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/1\/hi\/programmes\/newsnight\/films\/4204950.stm\">his Newsnight Focus Group<\/a> made a major contribution to the Cameron victory (discussed at length in <a href=\"http:\/\/politicalbetting.com\/index.php\/archives\/2005\/10\/08\/the-man-who-sparked-off-the-rush-to-cameron\/\">this thread on politicalbetting.com<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>However, anyone who&#8217;s spent any time in marketing or market research knows how easy it is to &#8216;throw&#8217; qualitative research, how easy it is to bias research group stimulus, and, particularly, how easy it to selectively edit the results, particularly if you&#8217;re looking for people to endorse your product (or politician).<\/p>\n<p>A couple of minutes&#8217; research shows pretty clear <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dkosopedia.com\/wiki\/Frank_Luntz\">evidence from the US is that Frank Luntz has a strong link to the Bush administration and the conservative right<\/a> as well &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/pages\/frontline\/shows\/persuaders\/interviews\/luntz.html\">this PBS interview<\/a> is particularly illuminating.  There&#8217;s also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talkingpointsmemo.com\/archives\/week_2004_10_03.php#003562\">evidence that he has misled media companies about those links<\/a>.  In light of this, I&#8217;m surprised that the BBC continue to use him as an &#8216;independent pollster&#8217; rather than as a &#8216;conservative pollster and commentator&#8217;.  Perhaps entertaining TV provides enough justification to throw any attempt at neutrality out of the window.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps we should get Media Matters for America &#8211; who <a href=\"http:\/\/mediamatters.org\/items\/200409280002\">wrote to MSNBC to complain about their use of Frank Luntz in 2004<\/a> &#8211; to write to the BBC in 2006?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stephen Tall wonders why the BBC continue to retain Frank Luntz over at &#8216;A Liberal Goes A Long Way&#8217;.
